Background information > Cast & Characters > Holly Turner

Who is Holly Turner?

Holly Turner is a police scientist, who while extremely clever and good at her job is still naive. She can be easily manipulated, however she is not a fool, and at the end of the day she knows what she's getting into. She is a private person who tends to keep to herself and rarely lets people into her world. She misses her father, but remembers him by continuing his work on the time machine.

Holly is a sensible woman who won't do things against her will easily. Once in a difficult situation she will think her way out of it logically. She can sometimes lose people in a conversation by using technical terms. However because of this, she has become a dab hand at explaining things in layman's terms.

Holly knows that the time machine is a brilliant discovery, but is sensible enough not to tell people about it. One main reason being it's a dangerous machine in the wrong hands, (See The Broken Crystal) as proven by Steven Marlowe. As such she is secretive, and has become a quick thinker in the lying department!

Holly takes her job seriously, and is a dedicated scientist. However she does feel like she is stuck in a rut. The job doesn't pay well, and she could be doing scientific research in practically any institute she wanted. However she stays because she likes the work, and enjoys working with Slade. Holly has been tempted into almost leaving, to pursue a career in research, however for some reason she stayed.

She is fairly domesticated as I presume she spent a lot of time looking after her father while he did his research. In some respects, I think she misses having someone to look after and fuss about. However, she isn't a great cook, as was made clear in Jeff Slade and the Loop of Infinity, when Holly admits to Slade she can't cook.

The best five words that describe her are:-

  • Intelligent
  • innocent
  • naive
  • caring
  • passionate

About Holly's Flat

Holly still lives in the flat (67 Sundown Court) she shared with her father, and has lived there for at least five years. Unlike Slade's it actually has some furniture and crockery for more than one person. The front room is almost entirely taken up with the time machine. The kitchen is quite spacious and has a proper table (unlike Slade's table tennis one!).

I assume there are two bedroom's, as Frederick Turner also lived there before he died. However we have only ever seen Holly's one. We only ever see Holly's bedroom briefly, but it is decorated in navy and white, with a black metal bed in the middle. The room is very neat, and tidy, matching the rest of her flat. She has a number of pictures above her bed, 10 in all, all the same size and in gold frames. It's unknown what's in these pictures, but the way they are arranged only add to Holly's character, i.e. ordered and efficient! As the bed is a double one, we assume that the room belonged to her father, and that her old room now serves as the spare room.

The flat is obviously a woman's one, as it has a few plants, and finishing touches which are rarely found in a bachelor pad. However it does give off an air of one who is lonely and rarely has visitors. It is well kept and neat, however this is more due to convenience than keeping a place nice for visitors. She can not afford to have too many things lying around the place, otherwise she could loss things vital to her.

About Holly's Love-life

This is probably the area in which she has the least experience and knowledge! She gives the impression of a woman who never really had time for relationships when she was younger, and so is ill experienced to cope with her feelings for Slade. We know of one confirmed boyfriend called Steve Marlowe who showed up again in the final episode of the first season (The Broken Crystal). Steve was the man who Holly's father thought she would eventually marry. However after her father's death, they drifted apart (which wasn't a bad thing..!) and didn't see each other for five years.

It's fairly obvious she has feelings for Slade, although she is either afraid of being hurt or too unwilling to accept them to do much about them. There is also the thought that were there no time machine, Slade wouldn't even look at her. However Holly is unlikely to let go of her feelings for Slade. One main reason being that he knows about the time machine. She now has someone she can confide in and talk to, she's not so alone anymore.

One of her main fears may be a lack of experience. It would appear Holly has had few boyfriends (in fact the figure may only be one!), and as such is unsure what to do around Slade. She clearly displays a jealous streak whenever Slade appears to be interested in another woman. Yet when pushed to say why she retreats and tries to change the subject (as seen in Fashion Shoot).

Holly's relationship with Grisham

Holly and Grisham rarely talk on anything but work, and rarely if at all meet outside working hours. Grisham is slightly suspicious of Holly, as if she knows she's hiding something from her. Holly respects Grisham, and her years of experience, but may feel slightly un-appreciated by Grisham. Seen only as the scientist to process evidence. However Holly may like the situation as it keeps Grisham occupied on other things and away from finding out about the time machine.

Holly's relationship with Slade

He likes her....he won't admit it in public...but he likes her.

She likes him but won't do anything about it. However if he were to sweep her off her feet and kiss her senseless, she wouldn't argue!

He annoys her, but in some respects she wishes she were more like him. She admires his courage, and spontaneity, but hates his arrogant assumption that he can use the time machine whenever he wants.
