Crowley takes hostages

After giving a lecture to the Institute of Time, Turner sees a television news report informing her that Slade as been shot and is a critical condition. The prime suspect is a man called Crowley. Turner rushes to the hospital to find out what time Slade was shot. She then rushes back to her flat, and travels back in time to try and prevent the shooting. Something she knows she can't do, but she has to try.

She finds Slade at a murder investigation of a young and upcoming artist (Jbara) whose pictures will now be worth ten times what they were before! Turner sticks to Slade like glue, saying she wants to help him. He assumes she means by travelling back to see who murdered the artist. However when she protests, and won't let Slade use the time machine he becomes suspicious. His misgivings are confirmed when he sees the timer on Turner's wrist, and phones the Institute where she is giving her lecture.

Initially Turner won't tell him why she has returned, but after a while she gives in and tells Slade that he will be shot at 6pm today. Crowley, the man who shoots Slade, is a man with quite a long criminal record, so Slade and Turner go to his home to find out some more about him. After all why would a man Slade has never met want to shoot him? They find a notebook which has a name in it that Turner recognises, but she can't remember from where. Sadly Crowley returns, and Slade is forced to arrest him, but when asked on what charge he has a problem. How can you arrest someone for something they haven't done yet!? Slade has to improvise, and he arrests Crowley for the murder of Jbara!

Slade places him in jail, but alas Grisham let's him out as he doesn't have anything to do with the murder! She has arrested Jbara's ex-wife whom she believes committed the murder. Slade and Turner then walk past a jewellers that the newly released Crowley is in the process of robbing. Turner recognises the name of the Jewellers as the name in Crowley's notebook. Slade runs after Crowley, but he runs into an art dealer's and takes hostages. The art dealer (Mr. Levenson) just happens to be one that has bought some of Jbara's paintings in the past and when questioned says he hasn't got anymore of them. However if you were to look in his storage area, you would find three such paintings! Crowley will only deal with Slade, something which Turner tries to stop him doing. However she has to get back to the time machine so can't stop him from going in. Besides you "can't cheat time" Slade reminds her.

Slade goes into the dealer shop and the hostages are released, all except Levenson. Slade makes a grab for Crowley's gun but it goes off. Fortunately it is Crowley who is shot. Thinking Turner has got it wrong, Slade fails to see Levenson pick up the gun. However Slade does see the paintings, and guesses correctly that Levenson is responsible for the murder of the artist, not Jbara's ex-wife. Sadly before he can tell anyone Levenson shoots him. Turner soberly goes back to the time machine, and then onto the hospital where she sees Levenson trying to finish the job of killing Slade. However just as Levenson is about to attack Turner with a scalpel Slade jumps up and stops him! Remember Crowley's notebook? Well it did for Slade what that cigarette case did for Blackadder, and stopped the bullet! We then learn that Levenson killed Jbara because he was going out of business. He had paid £90,000 for three of Jbara's painting, and with Jbara dead they would be worth nearly a million!
