Who is Nicky Robson?
Nicky is the prime example of a recent graduate of police training. He's yet to be tarnished by the stark reality of police work, and looks for the simple textbook case explanation. A well educated young man, in his early to mid twenties, he's often corrected Slade's grammar, and the way he talks let's you know he's an academic. He's suspected private school graduate, before going to university and then "police school". We don't know what degree he has, but it could be in criminal psychology.
Nicky is somewhat naive. He takes things at face value and can be easily led and lied to. Holly was able to escape from the cells in Death in the Family, quite easily, as Nicky had no idea she was capable of giving him a "testicular blow". He can very easily misjudge people, however he's young and he is learning. He shows great potential to become a good policeman. With Slade as a teacher, it shouldn't take him long!
Nicky is a hard worker and is quite prepared to do the legwork needed to become a policeman, but he does have aspirations of moving up the ranks. At times though, it seems like he tries too hard, and can become annoying, giving long answers to questions which only really needed a few words.
From the way he speaks (he doesn't have a common accent) we assume Nicky comes from a fairly well off family. We don't know if he has any brothers or sisters, but it would be a surprise to find out he's an only child. Outside of work, we know little about what Nicky does. He's often seen reading when he has a break at the police station, and he does have a girlfriend.

Nicky's relationship with Slade
Nicky respects Slade as a fellow detective, however Nicky does regard Slade's methods as somewhat questionable. Nicky does underestimate Slade's ability to get out of trouble, and every time Grisham fires Slade, Nicky is ready with a, "bad luck Slade". It never occurs to him that Slade will solve the case and get his job back.
Nicky and Slade aren't the greatest of friends, and never meet outside of work. They can work together, but it's obvious Slade would rather be working with Holly. Nicky doesn't really resent this fact, he puts it down to the special relationship Holly and Slade have, than to any character flaw he may have.
Nicky's relationship with Holly
Nicky has a great respect for Holly, although he doesn't understand her very well. She's often saying strange things, and never gives a reasonable explanation for things she does. But his in built respect for women means he never questions her and will take her word for a lot of things. If she says she needs to be somewhere, he'll take her there.
There is certainly a slight attraction to Holly on Nicky's part, but as he has a girlfriend and he knows she isn't interested, he never acts on it.
